2020 highlights
Roush Fenway Racing embarked on the 2020 season as the defending champs (Zack Novak driving) with Nathan Lyon and rookie Kollin Keister behind the wheel. Lyon, whose Coca-Cola iRacing Series season was a middle-of-the-road tour, competed in the winter iRacing Pro Series, where he ranked fourth in final points for the second year in a row.
Keister piloted the No. 17 car in 2020, where he stunned with a dominant victory at Charlotte Motor Speedway. The rest of Keister’s season, and ensuing Pro Series demotion, wasn’t enough to keep him in the series for a sophomore season. Steven Wilson moves up from the 2020 Pro Series to replace Keister.
2021 outlook
Steven Wilson’s big break was a bit of a lucky one. Normally, 20 drivers are promoted to the Coca-Cola iRacing Series from the iRacing Pro Series; however, this year, 21 entries were up for grabs when Christian Challiner retired from the series. If you can’t figure out the rest of the story, Wilson was that 21st driver, meaning he’ll get the call up to the big leagues. We’re interested to see how his iRacing dirt experience plays into his hands.
Nathan Lyon enters his third season still looking for his first victory. He’s often racing in top-10 contention at intermediate tracks, so it’s not out of the question if he racks up some points in the tracks making up the bulk of the schedule to stay in the top half of the points table.
Steve’s bold prediction
Roush Fenway Racing extends its winning streak to a third season. I won’t spoil who wins, though.
If you go Back to December in the iRacing Pro Series, it’s clear Wilson knows how to make Sparks Fly. In his rookie season, he hopes Roush Fenway Racing will tell him, “you are the best thing that’s ever been mine.” (Wilson’s a self-admitted fan of 2010 Taylor Swift, if it’s not obvious.)
