Wide World of Esports: From iRacing to JR Motorsports, Advice from Kligerman, and a DW Tribute Car

Making a Career from Racing Online

Dale Earnhardt Jr. showed off some fresh paint on his father’s 1980 championship-winning race car Friday on Twitter. Every detail was painstakingly remade to restore the car to mimic its former glory.

Junior credited his JR Motorsports employee Jordan Erickson for re-creating many of the decades-old decals by hand. The two originally met through iRacing, which led to a job for Erickson as a graphic designer at JRM.

It’s more proof that if you’ve got talent — whether that’s driving a virtual car, spotting for a fast driver or designing sharp paint schemes — skills built from esports and sim racing can lead to real-life success.

Oh, and by the way, Dale Jr. offered for iRacing to scan the car. Coming to a track near you, soon, perhaps?

AA’s Adventure to A

NASCAR Next member and Gander Outdoors Truck Series driver Anthony Alfredo is trying to make it to the top — and more than just in real-life NASCAR competition. The 20-year-old has been documenting his quest to earn a Class A license on iRacing.

Alfredo agrees the virtual cars are about as close as a driver can get to the real cars.

A New Path to Racing Cars

NASCAR racer and PEAK iRacing Series team owner Parker Kligerman tweeted an interaction with the parent of a young race fan who shared dreams of becoming a race car driver.

Kligerman’s advice for the 10-year-old? Start with esports.

eNASCAR Ignite Series Marches On

The virtual South Boston Speedway hosted the second week of the second eNASCAR Ignite Series season Thursday. With a shot in a real race car and a five-figure racing scholarship on the line, there’s a lot at stake for iRacing’s fastest teenagers to make a name for themselves.

Andy Trupiano picked up two additional race wins, making the Michigander five-for-six this season. With his impressive record, he holds a seven-point lead over Christian West after two weeks.

Paint Scheme of the Week

Sunday’s Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race marked Darrell Waltrip’s final call from the announcer’s booth. Jameson Miller created a beautiful tribute ride for iRacing — a replica of Waltrip’s familiar Western Auto Chevrolet, but on today’s Cup Series-style Camaro ZL1.
